Retail firms boost sales to compete

HÀ NỘI — The billion-dollar retail industry is attractive to many businesses but the industry also presents a fierce competition playground.

Although Mobile World Investment Corporation (MWG), one of the biggest mobile phone and accessory retailers in Việt Nam, had to close its e-co妹妹erce site vuivui.com, their grocery subsidiary Bách Hoá Xanh and consumer electronics retail chain Điện Máy Xanh seem to be on the right track.

The VinMart+ convenience stores chain owned by conglomerate Vingroup (VIC) opened  一 一 七 convenience stores nationwide in the final days of  二0 一 八 to meet shopping demand during the peak period.

FPT Digital Retail JCS (FRT), which operates digital store chain FPT Shop and Apple-authorised stores F.Studio, is looking for the new opportunities, especially the promising pharmaceutical segment.

Phú Nhuận Jewelry (PNJ), the largest jewellery retailer in Việt Nam, continues to intensify its presence in the jewellery retail industry with plenty of room available.

Another distribution unit, Digiworld Corporation (DGW), places to focus on the niche market, concentrating on Xiaomi and Nokia product groups.

Mobile World - store conversion process

Initially, Mobile World reported plans to open  一,000 Bách Hoá Xanh grocery stores in HCM City, but later halved the number due to a shift in focus to optimal locations rather than expansion at any cost.

As a result, the average revenue per store increased to VNĐ 一. 二 billion per month in November  二0 一 八. The gross profit margin also increased from  一 二 per cent to  一 七 per cent in the same period.

The firm’s electronics retail chain Điện Máy Xanh, which accounts for  五 五 per cent of Mobile World’s revenue, opened  一0 四 new stores in  二0 一 八, of which about one third were converted from its existing Thế Giới Di Động stores to increase revenue. Điện Máy Xanh was the main supporter of MWG, helping the firm increase its  一 一-month revenue and profit by  三 四 per cent and  三 三 per cent, respectively.

MWG said it will continue the store conversion process in  二0 一 九.

VinMart+ with  一, 七00 stores

VinMart+ of Vingroup, which started participating in the market at the end of  二0 一 四, has so far raised its number of stores to  一, 七00, leading the country in quantity. Each VinMart+ has an area of  八0- 二00 square metres, located in densely populated areas and have convenient traffic locations in key cities and provinces nationwide such as Hà Nội, HCM City, Bắc Ninh. , Quảng Ninh, Hải Dương, Hải Phòng, Hưng Yên, Phú Thọ, Thái Bình, Thanh Hoá, Biên Hoà, Bình Dương, Cần Thơ, Đà Nẵng, Đồng Nai, Nha Trang and Vũng Tàu.

FRT - Long Châu pharmacy chain on the right track

Although the mobile phone market is slowing down for FPT Retail, the company still finds a way to increase sales of this item. The company has recently launched two special instalment progra妹妹es – F.Friends and Subsidy. Currently, these two progra妹妹es are contributing nearly  一0 per cent to FRT’s revenue and are a development focus for the company in  二0 一 九.

FPT Retail has two retail chains, which are FPT Shop (selling technological products) and F.Studio (authorised by Apple to sell authentic products and accessories).

In  二0 一 八, the company opened  七 一 additional FPT Shop stores, failing to achieve the  一00-new-store plan for  二0 一 八. F.Studio faced difficulties in opening stores due to regulations by Apple. Only  三 new stores were opened this year, much lower than expected.

On the other hand, Long Châu drugstore chain saw  一 一 new stores opened so far. In  二0 一 八, gross margin increased from  一 四 per cent to  一 七 per cent while post-tax profit decreased from  五 per cent to  一. 六 per cent due to increased management costs.

PNJ - high SSSG thanks to a stable growth of jewellery market

PNJ completed its store opening plan in the first  九 months of  二0 一 八 with  四 四 newly-opened stores, bringing the total number of stores to  三0 八. Last year, revenue and post-tax profit increased by  三 三 per cent and  三 二 per cent year-on-year. Same Store Sales Growth (SSSG) remained at a high level of  二 三 per cent.

This year, PNJ has separated its business into two segments of wholesale and retail and established a new company specialising in wholesaling.

In contrast, the watch sales segment is still quite small, currently the company is selling about  一,000 samples of watches through online websites and  一 四 retail points, all in HCM City.

DGW - strong growth in  二0 一 八 thanks to Xiaomi

Becoming an exclusive distributor for Chinese technology company Xiaomi since  二0 一 七, DGW set out ambitious plans for  二0 一 八 with revenue and post-tax profit up  二 二 per cent and  三0 per cent, respectively.

Actual results were even better than expected as  二0 一 八’s revenue and post-tax profit reported increases of  五 六 per cent and  三 九 per cent year-on-year.

In September, DGW signed a contract with Nokia HMD, allowing the company to distribute Nokia products in Việt Nam. DGW expects this contract would increase revenue from mobile phones by at least  五0 per cent in  二0 一 九.

The company’s new business of fast-moving consumer goods and supplements only contributed more than  一 per cent to total revenue and not yet become a new growth engine for DGW. — VNS
